Do you find it odd that a coin dealer gave me this change?
As others have said, this is not odd for a dealer who wants to see you again.

Ikes are cool and I save all the ones I get but they have no real value above face except for exceptional condition or specific variety examples. This makes them the ideal coin to use for change from a coin store, most people have never used one for commerce and will likely keep it.

So I went back to day and picked up a silver bar. I asked him if he remembered me and he said yes. I told him I liked the coins in change he gave me yesterday, and he says " oh you like the shinny ones, do you want more? " So I got 3 more 1964 proof nickels, 2 more 1964 proof pennies, and 1 bicentennial kennedy in the best condition I've ever seen one in, but not proof like the others. Cool guy, only my second time going there, it's less a shop, more of a bullion shop ( big bulletproof window in the front) , but I think i'll try to develop a relationship with this guy.

There you go, a new customer for life, all for some low-value coins thrown in as change.

I think with the Walmart and online shopping mentality, a lot of us have forgotten what it's like to get real service from a small shop.

Bill Fivaz has a whole bunch of red seal $2 bills that he had glued into a booklet notepad-style. It was labeled Bill's Bills. He would always give those out as change, along with Ikes and $1 silver certificates.

Like everyone is saying, most dealers get the proofs really cheap and when they don't sell they just
use them for face.

It was nice of him to give those out to you!

By the way, I'm going to spend 6 ikes soon for face value.

What great looking coins. I don't we all wish we all could get such nice coins in change. Good incentive to go back to that dealer in the future.

Those proofs are delicate; very choice! Good score!

My dealer gives out some good bills as change, not necessarily really high premium but just nice. One time I got a 1950 $10.00, and another time I got a UNC. 2003 $2.00 note with a good serial number.

I got a 1935S Buffalo nickel in change today! It is rather worn, but for being in circulation for 79 years, it's not too bad. Now it is officially retired in my collection.
