Went to the bank to get some boxes of pennies to do a little copper searching and was really surprised to get a box of 2013 uncirculated pennies. I thought that all those date would have been out and about for awhile by now and have been marred and scratched by now.

Confounding by luck was that the other box that I picked up was 2014's in the same condition.

Should I consider going out and buying a lottery ticket?

Both boxes are to be returned to the bank at my first opportunity.

Now if I could only find comparable coins from Denver for these years.

You could do some error/variety searching...I've always wanted to get a full box like that (it'd keep me busy a lot longer than a normal box)

I would have rather have received coins to search for copper. I don't think these shield pennies are worth saving regardless of condition.

Groszy although I was disappointed in another box of 2013's I do save rolls of current coins in real decent shape. While I know that these coins will never amount to anything of value, I do believe that given enough time they will become items that will be appreciated at some point in time for either my kids or grandkids.

It sort of a take off on the infinite number of monkeys theory in literature.

High grade in a PCGS/NGC slab they are.

2013 Shield MS69 = $1500, MS68 = $250

BadThad those values are startling. However, I must ask what the population of those grades. It almost stands to reason that they are low. Possibly through attrition (people using the coins as they were expected to) offset by people like myself who are accumulators and setting aside coins.

I don't know what it costs to grade a coin, but the ratio of cost to coin value (face) should be high. I have a lot of 2010 through 2014 pennies but probably have a few coins that could be graded like this but through lack of knowledge I am very hesistant about getting them graded.

I further admit that the rewards are there, but for a 2013 MS 69 to be values like this there has to be a lot of lesser grades that make the exceptional possible.

I really would like to take a stab at doing this. I wonder what a MS60 would be valued at.

It is a rule of thumb - and mind you, I am in no way a fan of Moderns - that just about any Modern you can snag that's a righteous 67+, should be held. True top-end Modern Business Strikes (68 or better) are just tough to come by, and will retain value in the long run.
