At the recent TOREX show I showed to a dealer with whom I've done previous business a selection of my recent higher end Newfoundland acquisitions. He offered a balanced perspective on my coins, praising condition rarities and cherry-picking successes while pointing out the occasional scratch or old dipping. But this dealer had nothing positive to say about my 1888 50 Cent ICCS EF-40 linked below.

In case you can't see the price, with the buyer's premium I paid $822.50; 55% of trend.

For the money, I thought I had a respectable upgrade to my ICCS VF-20. It's also a top 10 coin, according to the 2014 report. Here are two photos of the coin in hand:

His opinion; the coin is the victim of a "chemistry experiment" gone wrong, I "shouldn't have bought it" and "no one's going to want to buy it from [me]". Not wanting to jeopardize a numismatic contact, I decided not to respond to these comments. But, here on the forum, I'll say this:

As for the chemistry experiment, I used my two healthy eyes to examine the coloration on the reverse when I placed my bid and decided the strength of the obverse compensated for whatever happened to the reverse. Above all, there is no comment from ICCS. If the coin was so inexcusably spoiled, ICCS likely would have said something.

"You shouldn't have bought it" is a hostile statement. Collectors buy what they like and this coin appealed to me. If the flip had said 'Cleaned', I would have moved on as my half dollar set is problem-free, but it doesn't so I went for it.

The fact that I purchased this coin at auction refutes the claim that no one will want to buy it from me; I had to outbid someone to win. So, it's possible I'll sell it for less down the line, but there will be a buyer. Yes, it would be nice if the reverse had a virgin surface but the coin has a lot of merits.

What do you think?

It's a superb coin. The grading is very fair, not overgraded at all like some of the newer ICCS Coins. 55% of trends is good. I generally pay 50%-65% for all my coins so that if I ever have to sell, even to a dealer I won't lose money. There are always advantages to certain dealers, like you could buy from a very old fashioned dealer and what he thinks is an EF-40 is easily an EF-45. Certain dealers are bitter as a result of personal experiences,my local Coin Dealer is very stingy on ICCS Graded Silver Dollars and criticized them openly, even coins that have, to anyone else, no issues. This because he bought a few ICCS Dollars one of which was a MS-66 which personally was no better than a 63 and a 1939 MS-64 that's not better than a VF-30 (There was very definite wear, probably the most grossly overgraded coin I've ever seen).

The point is, everyone had their own opinion. He may have disliked the coin for his own reasons. To me, and I think everyone will agree, this is a perfectly good coin.

The only opinion that matters is your own, until it comes time to sell!

I think it is a very attractive coin, and it's not an easy one to fine in XF. Mine's only a VF in a PCGS XF40 holder - it would be awesome to have the same level of detail as your piece. Well done!

Looks like a very nice coin, that is way above average . A word ................ in the coin world , never take anything you hear personally. Once you get by the hype , jealousy, thievery and back stabbing, numismatics is a great place to be.

I really like it and I think the grading is conservative. The mark on the neck in the Heritage pictures is distracting. If I were looking for a coin of this value that mark may deter me from purchasing the coin. Although that is the difficulty with these old sterling pieces. They are just so soft that it is hard to find a high grade example without a ding or scratch.
