Hey guys... hope I got this in the right place.... by chance, after learning about another coin, I ran into this coin.... New Zealand Mints Black Rhino 2014 silver proof coin. Here is the link to the mint http://www.nzmint.com/coins/shop-on...rhinocerosts site - Rhinos are one of my favorite animals after elephants and after seeing the coin and its presentation, I bit on getting one, suckered again

Seems a little strange that New Zealand would choose a rhino. Many rhinos in NZ? But anyway... I'm in Africa at the moment and saw rhinos, black rhinos are gray and white rhinos are gray...... There seem to be quite a few animal coins around these parts, not sure if any have rhinos, I'd have thought so.

From what I've heard, the white rhinos were called "wide" (or a similar word in a similar language) rhinos because of their facial shape, but some dope heard "white" instead of "wide" and that's how it started.

Not a New Zealand coin. No tie between NZ and Rhinos - Black or White. I think you will find that this coin was made BY THE NEW ZEALAND MINT for the Pacific island of Niue. I could be wrong but . . . . . .

It's OK, Donald Duck has nothing to do with NZ, either, and that's their most popular coin!

Again, I think that the 'Donald Duck' coin that you refer to is in fact a coin from/for the island nation of Niue but was minted in NZ by the NZ Mint. I do not believe that either coin is in fact a NZ coin. My reference is the fact that both coins have the word 'Niue' on them and neither coin has the words 'New Zealand' on them. A number of these tiny island nations bolster their GDP by issuing 'collector' coins and stamps.

Quote: Seems a little strange that New Zealand would choose a rhino As Charlie Brown might say: "AGHHHHHHHH!!" The New Zealand Mint is private. It does not produce coins for New Zealand and probably never will. So New Zealand did not produce a Rhino Coin! IMHO the NZ mint is one of the worlds numismatic travesties.

I just got it... this is what I like about it-
1- presentation- coin comes in a nice "wooden" crate.
2- The rhino is well made, is not cartoonish, the rhino has nice detail to it and stands out on the coin, its not a busy look but very clean and I appreciate reflection effect they did with the rhino's reflection in the water.. when you step back and look at the coin from above, you can see the effect very nicely
3- the packaging is very nice also, distinct with nice raised lettering and texture to the box.
I give this coin much praise and like that it features rhinos.
If you havent checked this coin out, give it a look.
