Hey, I bought a couple of German coins today from 1950s to 2001 and I looked for silver; no silver. However, I found two 2 Mark coins that were unusually shiny, kind of like a cameo proof quality. They were 1969 series from 1975 and 1979. Better pictures will follow, but I have some preliminary ones. I've seen tons of uncirculated German marks but none are this shiny. What is it? Real proof? And what's it worth? I have yet to test its weight to see if it's silver . Will update post.

Said coin is in bottom center: http://i.imgur.com/VHXOrf9.jpg

It looks like a proof to me.

Photographing it alongside normal coins was a good idea

These coins are in the Krause Manual on the NGC website. For whatever reason, the German mints don't refer to these coins as Polierte Plate (proof). Instead they call them Stempelglanz (mirror surfaced), but by conventional terms they are proof. As far as I know they were almost exclusively in proof sets. A single proof set from 1975-1979 are worth 10-15 bucks, so a single coin from a set, not in the set, not in perfect condition isn't worth very much (less than a dollar, if you could even find a buyer). The earlier Max Planck 2 Mark coins are rarer and worth considerably more.

Correct. Both the proof and circulating versions of this coin were only struck in cupronickel-clad nickel.
