I picked up another Valentinian III tonight. It is possibly a fake but for £7 I am not bothered.

It is supposed to be from the Baalbek Hoard, never heard of it and can't find anything on the net about it. Also supposed to be from B A Seaby collection.

I was the only bidder, also suspicious! Opinions please?

Thanks echizento. I asked for further info from the seller but got no reply. It will be nice if it turns out to be geniuine. And the batch of coins I have on ebay will pay for it!

I thought it was genuine, but passed it up (ive already had one). The Baalbek hoard is just a group dug up in Syria - usually such finds dont get names. I guess the name here was 'attributed' by the seller, based on knowledge of the original find spot.

Seller has come back with info that he used to buy from Seaby's from the 1950s onwards. Shame he didn't keep receipts, but there you go.

Lebanon has produced many coins from that archaeological site and surrounding areas and most have ended up on the market. The seller has used the word 'hoard' very loosely as the site is known as Baalbek and it doesn't refer to any hoard. Coins from this period do often turn up for sale and are generally purchased in bulk for around 2 GBP a coin. Nice coin for the money PP.
