I'm new to coins. My father gave me this back in the 90's and I assumed it was just a neat old coin. It's been sitting in a draw here since 2002. Can someone tell me what I have? I see tons of stuff online but I can't make heads or tails of grades or variations. Thanks in advance for your collective wisdom!

Thanks,

It looks like a regular 1859 narrow 9 1 cent in VF-20. Worth about 8 dollars. If we could get a real close up picture of the date, we might be able to tell if you have something more. There are many different double punch varieties for this date.

You can generally tell by the look and feel of it also if it leaves a funny coppery smell on your hands when you handle it that's what I find. Buy the way it is bronze as I inherited a few of grandfather

From the close up it looks like you have a double struck 5 or 5 over 5

Since you are new to coins and also not Canadian I figured I could tell you more about the coin itself rather then grade and value.

You have a Canadian large cent, up until 1920 all our pennies where bigger then what we used from 1920-2012 ( those where the same size as your current penny)

The Latin inscription reads " [Queen] Victoria by the Grace of God". Queen Victory was Canada's first queen and also the longest reigning monarch in the British Empire serving just under 64 years.

Also if you go down the rabbit hole that is Coin collecting it is not always about the value of a coin, but the history you are holding, a nice cheap and interesting Canadian set to work on is the Millennium quarters. Have fun!
