Who knows! Appears to have been hammered or stamped.

THE NICKEL is a legitimate error, a Cud. A piece of the die broke off, and on subsequent strikes, metal flowed into the void.

THE Wheat cent is commonly seen, either the result of boredom and curiosity or a crude attempt to fake a mint error, when idle hands sandwich coins together and hammer or squash them. Me and my friend Larry actually made that particular penny during our morning coffee break at work at 10:00 AM on August 17th, 1976 in northern Wisconsin. Why? Because by 2:30 in the afternoon in August it's too hot to be messing with such stuff.
