Hi everyone. I'm new to this site. I have attached an image of a coin I recently purchased and would like some information on it. Can anybody help?

That's pretty interesting. The 1 Dala coin was minted in Philadelphia, so I'm unsure how this could (legitimately) originate from anywhere else.
I know of some countries that did trial strikes in soft metals within the mint, but did the US mint do that--does anyone know? Welcome to CCF!

I have been doing a bit of research myself about this possibly being a test strike plate. My concern is that it might be a forgery given that a lot were sold recently on ebay by a particular seller. However the one I have does not have the highly polished look of those ones. The patina on mine is more typical of a coin of this age. Any opinions?

That would be quite a valid concern, since I have neither heard nor seen these plates described in any book or auction--has anybody else? The fact that one seller had many rings very loud warning bells--if real, they would not be plentiful.

Hi DVCollector,

Actually all of the coins being sold by this particular eBayer look a bit sus (in my opinion). They are all highly polished and suposedly 'rare'. People are still buying them at very high prices.

As requested DVCollector,

Here are three links. As I said in my previous reply. I am not accusing anybody of forgery. I am only saying that it looks a bit suspicious.

Thanks for those links! This is the first time I've seen these, and I cannot find a single reference at the big auction house Heritage--which kind of underscores these are not actual trial pieces. Then there's this page describing forgeries. There's a lot of fakes of these Hawaiian coins out there, so these plate strikes could be spin-off from that?

That's just what I found so far--if anyone knows more, please chime in!

What do you make of these coins?
I'm not an expert on US commems, but something looks "off" about those--maybe others will chime in?

The 1924 Peace dollar for sale currently is fake. The 4 has a curved diagonal to it whereas an authentic one is straight.

The Cleveland half hair had way to many strands compared to an authentic one.

This seller was mentioned in this thread, https://goccf.com/t/182649

I'd avoid this seller just too many red flags and things that make me suspicious of any coin he/she is selling.

Hi Meadowview Collector,

Thanks for your input. It is what I suspected but did not have the knowledge to be certain.

I think that simply avoiding this ebay seller is not the best solution because many other innocent people have already been stung for large amounts of money and will continue to be so. ebay need to be notified by a recognized numismatist about what is going on.

For the record I did not buy my coin plate from this website.
