I'm new here but I've collected for years. Yesterday at a garage sale I may have found an 1877 IH.

The last 7 is gone but the is a slight indication of a number. This indication slants like a 7 maybe....
What do I do?
I'd put up a picture but I don't have the camera... any suggestions?

Well, pictures are the only way we can really help, but you can compare what is left of the last digit to other 1877 Indian Heads.

I know photos would help but even with the coin in hand it is so hard to see. I sent in a 1922 no D to get it certified and I wonder if they can certify this coin too or should I nick -a-date a copper coin?

What do you do to get a high resolution photo of a coin?

Thanks for the Welcoming! :-0

No, do NOT nick-a-date a copper coin, or any coin for that matter. It's a form of acid, that will damage a coin. They could possibly sort it, but if the last digit is unverifiable, then they will more than likely give it a details grade/ send it back.

I figured I shouldn't acid treat but for I would like to get if certified on way of the other.

The angle on the remnants make it either an 1877 or 1875. I guess I am hoping there is a way...

This would fill a hole in my collection! Thanks for your help.

Does it have a shallow or bold 'N' reverse? If it is a bold 'N', don't waste your money. It can't be an 1877. If it is a shallow 'N' there still is the possibility, but there are many other dates with the shallow 'N'.
