Hello all,

During a recent stint of roll hunting, I became acutely aware of two major toning variations in new Lincoln zinc cents. Some zincs of the same year appear to be more reddish, resembling their copper counterparts. Others appear golden... almost proof-like. I was curious as to which tone of zinc cents others prefer. Both have their beauty. The red ones seem to have more "depth" to their appearance. The golden ones are very lustrous & well... golden!

Care to weigh in? I'd be interested to hear what others think about which coloration is more desirable & why.

Thanks!

I honestly despise the new cents, I sort pennies for copper, so they do nothing for me ;)

Red is certainly more desirable , having come across a red zincoln cent recently - I found the color quite alluring. I think red is more alluring because it instantly makes me think of copper

When the zinc planchets are plated some of the zinc dissolves into the plating solution. Over time the concentration of zinc rises higher and higher and the planchets instead of being with pure copper are plated with copper and zinc, a brass alloy. As the zinc content rises the plating becomes more and more yellow. Eventually the plating solution is discarded and replaced with one that has no zinc and the whole process starts again.

That's my dilemma. From brassy to brown, I love them ALL!
