Here is the checklist I've been using to work on my set of Ike's, it jibes closely with the Dansco album with the exception of the 1972 plain's. The checklist lists the three variations but the Dansco album has only one provision for a 1972 plain. So that would account why the checklist has 34 entries and the album has 32 marked spaces. So does anyone just stick the other two 1972 types at the end in the extra holes and label them? Or just pick one variety?....or? Just trying to get this right, or as close as I can anyway. * Checklist from About.com

That's totally up to you, the collector. Some collectors like the varieties, others not so much. I personally did not get to riled up about the '72 varieties. My Ike set observes a traditional 32-coin set. That's what great about collecting...do it your way!

Thanks for the reply Mach1, I think I'm going to just use the album as a guide too, later, if I find the other varieties I can always add them at the end. I think it's going to be tough enough finding higher grade 72's anyway.

I gotta say, Nickels, that I really like seeing your new found interest and enthusiasm for the Ike dollar series. It's always good to get another Ike fan on board. If I were you, and this is just a suggestion, I would just stick to completing the Dansco basic set for now. You can learn a lot about each coin and the series as a whole during this project/journey. I think you'll find that as you put this set together your interest may very well grow into other varieties of the series. Of course, I have also recommended to others that starting a registry set with major varieties is a fun and rewarding venture in itself. My major variety registry set is complete, but I have now began the process of upgrading certain coins. I'll never own a PF70 Ike, so my PF69 subset will never be upgraded, but there are plenty of others that I can tackle. This is yet another way you can enjoy the "evolution" of your set. Keep up the good work AND your enthusiasm.

Hello Darth Morgan, thanks for the post and you are correct in assuming I'm fired up with these Ike's. At first all the Bicentennial's were very confusing to me and still are and almost caused me to just forget about going ahead with this. Then I had the idea to just work around them and by the time I get to them maybe it will make more sense to me. Well, I've got it whittled down to needing only 6 more to complete my set, at least the first incarnation of it. Two of them that I need are those pesky Bi Issues. I saw another fellows Ike collection and he had two of those Ike comems at the end of his album and it looked really nice. Thanks again to you and the others offering help here. What a great site!

I completed the 32 coin set in the Dansco. I do not like empty holes, so I placed four seemingly random duplicates in the last four holes of the album... 1971-D, 1972, 1976 (V1), and 1977-D. After I learned about the three 1972 varieties, I checked the two I had in my album. I was surprised to find that I have a variety 3 in the dated slot and a variety 1 in the extra slot. I still do not have a variety 2, so no telling where it would end up.

I think what I'm going to shoot for is a three coin set of 1972~type 1, 2 and 3 and then the 1990 Eisenhower Centennial silver dollar. I'll turn my attention towards these after I finish the regular issues of the album.......and I am very, very close.

Good call! For what it is worth, I have the 1990 in the Commemorative Dollar hole of my 7070.

I finished my set about a year ago. my dansco is full except the 73 proof , I have 3 in the mint box and do not want to open them.

Quote: Sorry about that. Heh..I'm going to need something to do after these Ike's and I wasn't thrilled about type sets but carnold showed his, and it looks great, and then you spoke of it....I'm like ol Dobbin..dangle the carrot in front of me and sooner or later I'll bite it! Actually, I'm checking out all the possibilities for a next project and a type set may be just the thing. I think there are too many Kennedy halves for me to do a set of those... I don't have that long of an attention span. Franklins?...kinda pricey...Any suggestions from anyone that did an interesting project or is working on one?

Quote: Franklins?...kinda pricey... Not really, if you like circulated coins (I do). High grade, maybe a bit more; depending how high you go. It was the second set I completed after the Eisenhower dollars. I filled half of it from roll hunting, the other half from trading roll hunt silver (duplicates, of course). This was back in the 1990's, so things may be different now. In my opinion, the easiest thing is Jefferson nickels. Not counting the proofs, it is very easily completed from circulation (roll hunting).

Thanks for your comments jbuck, I'm still trying to decide about what's next. Let me ask you a question about the Ike's first if I may. I'm down to needing three coins to finish my Ike's. A 1971 and a 1972 and what I'd like to ask you about, the Bicentennial 1976S 40% silver proof. The only way to get a "real" one is the 3-pack like this one? Thanks much. I agree with you about the nickels.....but I already have several sets put away. I'm a big fan of Jefferson and all the history that goes with him.

I haven't dug mine out in a while, might try to take some photos and post. I went ahead and posted some here https://goccf.com/t/182712
