LAst month I saw Heritage had a very interesting NGC slabbed 1780 Maria theresa thaler. I was highly entertained by an obvious mistake made by the grader, and as a result I bid on the coin and ultimately won it. Heres the NGC link:

http://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/i...=3395034-038

It arrived to day, and sick of working in the garden like I should have been I crafted an email and dispatched it off to NGC. The text of the email follows: I am not really worried about having the error corrected.....actaully far more important to me is will the grader concerned have to buy the drinks at the next happy hour?

Heres the text
Subject: mechanical error: 3395034-038

Quote:
Dear Sir/Maam

I am the owner of this low graded coin. I purchased from heritage auctions and it arrived today in Vienna Austria. The grader has made a quite spectacular mechanical error. The error is of the magnitude of claiming a San Francisco mint coin legitimately "wears" the "CC" mint mark. I am quite happy to keep the slab, as it is a spectacularly bad attribution on the part of your grader and will make a wonderful talking point at the next meeting of the Vienna Numismatic society. However, should you prefer to correct this error I am happy to send the coin to you for the correction at NGC's full cost( I do get discount with DHL so that might help out).

The error:
The grader has designated the coin 1780 BPS-IK....... the spectacular error is the letter "B". Maria Theresa Thalers of this vintage and earlier( 1812-1820) tended to have mint signatures only. In the case of this Prague restrike the mint signature is PS-IK ( which the slabbed coin bears). There is no "B" on the coin in the manner that the grader has stated. There is only one MTT restrike that has a mint mark and mint signature; that mint being Kremnitz( Hungary). Kremnitz used the mint mark "B"( on the obverse) and the mint signature SK-PD ( on the reverse). That rare restrike was only produced in 1784.

Obviously the grader somehow thought this coin should also have the mint mark "B" ( which it doesn't) If a Prague mint MTT were to have a mint mark it would have been the letter" C". Should your grader wish to improve his/her skills I can obtain for him her a copy of Hafners Lexicon of the 1780 Maria Theresa thaler.....the cost to your grader would be about US$27.00 plus postage. It might assist him/her with correct attributions in the future( but it would be far less entertaining).

Please let me know what NGC wants to do. And please pass my thanks on to the grader for the considerable amusement he/she has provided.

Best Regards

PS: I hope you guys have the same sort of traditions that we do here.....ie at happy hour the grader concerned has to pay for the drinks of his/her colleagues to atone for their error

Wow... I don't know what to say about that letter other than, perhaps, you could have been a bit more tactful and less presumptuous. There is an awful lot more I would like to say, but to keep things civil I just won't say it.

? was it offensive...Certainly it was my intention to be offensive. I am mortified that some one thought that it could be!

I just thought it was funny. Actually the mistake is as bad as saying San Francisco coin has the mint mark of Carson city on it. Perhaps my foreign sence of humour is not Suitable to American... I bought the coin and slab simply because I thought it was so funny!!

I will send another email apologising immediately and explain I was only teasing!

As for me, you are my hero. NGC allows some truly egregious labeling errors out the door, moreso than all the competition combined, and maybe it's gonna take some ridicule to bring them around.

From what I understand of the process at NGC, the graders are only responsible for establishing the grade -- others determine the correct attribution, generate the label and perform quality control. Clearly multiple persons dropped the ball but unless the grade is wrong, it was not the graders fault.

Dunno they have some pretty big egos. The wife and I went to an NGC luncheon at a FUN show (?2 years ago) and all they did was brag and tell everyone how they walked on water ad nauseum.
Sometimes beneficial for cherry picking though when they screw up the variety in my favor.

Oh, the next "misattributed in an NGC slab" I make money from won't be the first.
