Rick just sent out notice about his newest project! (copied below); ----- The 3rd edition "Snow" book! The 3rd edition of the Flying eagle and Indian cent Attribution Guide will be printed shortly. It is a two-volume hardcover edition. It will be printed in full color and is 900 pages. This is the culmination of 26 years of research first published in 1992 as Flying Eagle and Indian cents. In 2000, the book was renamed to the Attribution Guide and published in four volumes. This took 8 years to accomplish. Now the book has been updated, corrected and nearly all pictures are converted to color. This printing will be a hardcover library edition. This is an expensive project and to get it funded, I am using Kickstarter.com to get it off the ground. This is your opportunity to get the first numbered editions and other benefits. We must raise $42,500 for this project for it to be funded. If we raise more, we will increase the number printed. By contributing to the funding of the project you will get the following: $17 or more......Your name in the book. $45 or more......2nd edition of A Guide Book of Flying Eagle and Indian cents, by Rick Snow. This will be autographed. $75 or more......A PDF version of the book, suitable for your iPad. $225 or more....A copy of the two volume book when it is finished. These will be signed and numbered in the order the order is received. Contributions of the higher levels will get you all the gifts below that amount. Thanks you so much for your past support and for supporting this important project. ------ Rick is funding this through the Kickstarter funding program. I've already pledged to get the Hard Bound Books and PDF version. It is very likely these will become collectors items in their own right if Rick can get enough funds to have them printed. I encourage all Flying Eagle and Indian Head cent collectors and fans to join up and pledge to fund this project! So I take it that Rick Snow discontinued the electronic (pdf) attribution guides? I guess that explains why my order didn't go through. I didn't know he had back-issues for the second edition in all dates, but that seems like a good deal. I get something, he gets something.

Quote: 39 backers and 20% of the way to the goal after 3 days... I really hope he can do this! It was 4 before I signed up, and most are selecting the top tier at $225.00 probably due to the books and the value a limited edition numbered and signed will bring in the long run. Rick has put in decades of hard work to get as far along as he has in attributions of varieties in the series. He is also a good guy - coin dealer!

Help educate me. Why not just take pre-sale orders and use that for publication funding?

I believe it's the same thing, only this way is more "modern" there is a certain hipness to crowd sourced funding these days, when a kid trying to make a potato sale can raise over $50K in an afternoon, something is working! LOL. If Rick can't get enough support through this way, I hope he still will offer the deal through pre-orders. The Kickstater way allows for a guarantee that the money is there through Amazon payment services via funder's credit cards.

While KickStarter charges fees (IIRC it's 5% +/-) for that they handle all of the work of taking 200 individual CC, charging them, refunds, etc. It also reaches an additional audience. And finally, the problem with taking pre-orders is that you could run afoul of the FTC's mail order rules - absent specific disclosures you have to ship within 30 days.
KS also provides some insulation between Rick's regular business and this (were something to go wrong - although it's hard to imagine what could - 200 chargebacks would kill him going forward on credit card fees).
And as Westcoin said, it's hip & modern

As you may know by now Rick completed his Kickstarter campaign fully funded! Here is his message on the book, there is still time to get in if you want a copy at the early price. Quote:The Flying Eagle and Indian cent Attribution Guide, 3rd Edition (The "Snow" book) is going to the printer in the next few days. It is a two volume set, 900 pages, hardcover and full color. The book will sell for $250 as a set and will be ready by late November or early December. I want to thank all the people who helped with the Kickstarter event. We were successful in meeting our goal. Already we started shipping out the Flying Eagle and Indian cent Guide books as promised. In October, the PDF version of the book will be distributed. When the "Snow" books arrive at our office, we will let you know and ship them out right away. We are still accepting pre-publication orders for the book at $225 per set. You can order the book on the web site at this special price until October 1.

I received my copy of the Whitman Flying Eagle and Indian Head cent guide book. I had the first edition in my library already and wasn't going to update it until later on. Now, I don't have to. Glad I chipped in to fund this project I think the PDF and books are going to be great. -MV

Received an update yesterdayQuote: The books are now out to the printer.
This means that I can start sending out the e-reader version. In the next few weeks we will be sending an e-mail with links to the PDF files. With the book files I will include instructions on how to load the files on your e-reader.
Thank you,

I have been busy reading the pdfs that Rick sent out. So far I am quite impressed as to the depth he has gone into and I am only into the pattern coins, so far. The pdf files are picked up by the recipient via a one time download link. Interestingly each page of the main part of the book has my name printed on the bottom of the page. Have never seen this type of copy protection before with a pdf file. Anyways, if you enjoy early small cents - then you need to read this 2 volume set, it is excellent! an't wait to get the big 2 volume set in hand.

Got mine! Late, but I couldn't afford it earlier. Did a small donation to the kickstarter, but not enough to get the book, and so got it from Rick Snow's ebay. Yea!
