Got this today. There is a little bit of a black smudge on both liberty's leg and the eagle neck. How would it grade and would these marks bother you? Thanks *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

I would put her in acetone overnight and see if that doesn't do something with those marks.
I would say AU58 simply due to the likelihood those smudges removed luster.

Acetone should get rid of them....just be sure to soak it in the acetone for a few minutes and rinse or they will re-deposit. Swapping with a Q-tip may help.

I forgot to add....do not soak in acetone very long (NOT overnight) the acetone will evaporate and nasty stuff may re-deposit.

Nice strike. I'm in the AU55 or AU58 range.

It will only evaporate if you put it in an uncovered container. Soak it overnight to make sure you loosen up any of the gunk in the details. In a covered container. If it does come off from that soaking, as mentioned, rinse it in clean acetone. I failed to mention that part.

The marks would bother me for sure. Acetone removes...? Carbon?

It removes organics and adhesives. As it is non reactive to metal, its pretty much the first thing to try to remove stuff.

So acetone bath doesn't violate the "thou shalt not clean old coins" commandment?

follow up question since I don't want to mess it up, what kind of container for the acetone bath? Glass, I am thinking but I have more sizes in plastic lying around.

Heh, definitely use glass or ceramic. Plastic might melt or it will at least suffer some damage. I bought little glass dipping bowls from homegoods for like $4 each, they come with lids. Handy little things, you can fit a couple silver dollars in each and cover for a couple days.
