...or not

National-Geographic-Knows-Its-Coin-Stuff...

I love this show, "Going Deep with David Rees," but I saw this and had to rewind to make sure I wasn't seeing things. Turns out I wasn't

The episode was about how to flip a coin. He ended up buying an 1855 Seated Liberty half in a higher circulated grade for $85 and went around flipping the coin over and over and over. I was just like

Actually, true.

The date freeze kept them dated 1964, but they did mint silver coins into 1966.

The last 90 percent silver quarters were struck in January 1966, the last silver dimes in February of that year, and half dollars in April 1966. The change to normal dating began on Dec. 29, 1965, when the dates on cents and nickels were changed to 1965. The date 1965 was used until July 31, 1966, when the date was changed to the current one, with normal dating resumed on Jan. 1, 1967.

I was wondering if they kept minting them after 1964, but I assumed the date freeze of the mid-to-late 60's only applied to clad coins. Well that's cool, I learned something new! Thanks jbuck for the clarification!

Same here! The worst part is he kept doing it again and again! Not only that he taped the coin to a pencil!

jbuck - you forgot about nickels. I think they're still minting 1964 nickels.

In my defense, the original post was about silver, but true that!

I think someone found a really nice 1964 recently, proof they must still be minting them.

If everyone donated their 1964 nickels to charity we could do some good many times over.
