Hello all,
I want to store my coins (circulated that I found in changes) in either new medicine plastic bottle that I got brand new from the pharmacy OR using the used film holder (plastic) that I got from the film developer/processor.
Any comments/suggestion or procedures/steps to take before using them? Thank you all for your time.

I use them. But I wouldn't suggest storing BU coins in them.

I use the film canisters all the time for world coins / lower denomination coins. I don't use pill even if clean them just in case some chemical is still left over from the pills. If you plan to keep rolls then spend the 50 cents to buy a coin tube from a coin shop. Less chance of any chemical reaction between your coins and the plastic.

Sort of depends on if your buying them or given them of course. If the plastic is safe enough for medicines that protect your life, I doubt it would effect your coins. Now if your purchasing them, you should look at other options such as plastic coin rolls from a dealer, internet coin supply house, coin shop, etc. If you use medicine containers that have been used it would be highly recommended they be very well cleaned with Alcohol. The primary thing to note is to avoid the clanking together of coins. Even older ones can be further deminished in value by continous additional markings.

My grandfather kept coins in used medicine containers all his life. I was just looking through them the other day. There are pennies, nickels, dimes, half dollars, dollars, quarters, foreign coins, silver, and other stuff and it doesn't appear to have any bad effect on the coins. Like somebody else said, if it holds medicine that treats us, it can hold coins.

Has anyone had any coins kept in pill bottles that were affected in any way due to residual chemicals?

If they did it was due to not cleaning the bottles. A dirty bottle, regardless of what used for can ruin coins.

I thought I was the only one who did that I use both of them, but not for BU or expensive coins.

I use plastic film cannisters also. Think about it - film uses silver halide crystals so a reaction to the cannister would be undesirable for film also.

I've used film canisters for years and never experienced a problem. I never thought about using medicine bottles.

I use my empty pill bottles all the time since I get so many each month. I keep all my change in them. They are pretty handy and the best thing of all is they're free.

] Devils advocate: Many medicines are sulfur bearing compounds. Having said that I would agree that after cleaning you are highly unlikely to have any problems from the pill bottles. |
