^You are correct, what is this type of damage called...just rim nicks? Looks like someone tried to scratch off some gold...

If you crop a bunch of the un-needed area in the photo you'll get better results. Start with the CCF free image optimizer. It's kinda fun.

This is the largest it will get using Upload Image  Using Photobucket  I used a different coin because if I delete on Photobucket it will be deleted here as well.

It does look like a polished/damaged coin with AU Details (likely ex-jewelry) and should have cost right around melt value or about $325 to $350. There's nothing wrong with buying damaged old gold as long as you can find it for bullion prices.

coinmaniac1, you'll find lots of useful info in the Coin photography section. SsuperDave or one of the other gurus here posted a great general all-in one tutorial I think, I can't find it at the moment. Don't give up!
