Is there body of opinion as to how many of these coins actually exist today?

AustralianStamp.com article, quoting old Renniks catalogue.

If the Bombay Mint kept no records of how many were made or who they sold them to, then population data is tricky to estimate. If the old Renniks report is true, then some would have found their way to America, where they presumably still are. Though none have been slabbed by PCGS yet.

We found reference to an estimate of 100 coins but that was in the 1960's. One dealer told us recently that given that they almost never appear at auction that an estimate of less than 20 is more likely. We've got a 1943 half penny proof re-strike on our website right now and it's quite apparent that it's not a normal strike.

Thank you for all the replies. This raises another question.
I note the price of your half penny on your web site and it significantly below the Renniks price. Does this reflect the condition of the coin or is the Renniks prices not an accurate reflection of the market?

Pre 1955 pre-decimal proofs have been selling for half to a third of catalogue value so those catalogue values are not a true reflection of what the market is paying right now. (You only have to check public auction prices realised). It's a lovely, quality coin in hand.
