I just won a 2005 P+D mint set auction on ebay for $3.65. There is $5.92 face value of coins in that set with all the State Quarters. The seller would have been better off taking the coins down for a fancy coffee this morning. Most mint sets are a bad investment, I think. In most cases the coins are worth more individually than in the sets. But I like them for getting mint condition album hole fillers. I was looking at another Kennedy I needed and the buy it now on a single mint set was the same price as the cheapest buy it now for the individual Half dollar. Well OK, you don't have to twist my arm to take the other coins for free!

That's my strategy: buy mint sets and break them up to get unequivocal uncirculated examples of all my modern coins.
Of course, that 2005 set you bought is one of the 'satin finish' sets that blows a hole in my strategy for the years 2005 - 2010. Going to have to go the individual route for true business strikes from those years.

I'm not too picky about business vs satin strike for my collection. But for those that are, it's too bad the mint sets aren't true to their name for those 6 years where they did the satin finish. They already had the proof sets for those that wanted a non-business, shiny coin.

For that matter, many of the modern proof sets are not worth much more than face value. Those who purchased the modern mint sets from the mint can be nothing but disappointed. It surprises me that the large amounts sold by the mint get absorbed by the market.
In any event it sounds like you got a good deal, now if you could only buy them in huge quantities below face value you could make a "mint" (pun intended).

That is a great deal. I've been buying mint sets for the last few years at or below face value. My most recent find was (14) 1981 mint sets at $20 below face shipped and 14 1977 mint sets @ $5 over face. I paid the extra on the 1977s for the Ikes! It is a great way to get some gem examples of clad coinage and the not so nice just get spent.

I need to set up a small business using automated bidding to buy mint sets cheaper than face value and paying my kids to strip them and cash them in. I could be a hundredaire in no time!

That's what a seller gets for not putting in a proper starting price!
I stopped buying these from the mint years ago. My local shop has piles and piles of mint and proof sets normally selling well below the issue price. In fact, I pretty much stopped buying Mint products because they eventually show up in the shop for cheap. Some of the best deals for me have been the gold coins. My dealer usually only pays below melt, i.e. no numismatic premium. A few years ago I bought a half oz gold coin for melt. I wasn't even thinking of buying gold that day but it was just sitting on the counter and it caught my attention. He said "I was just going to melt that", so I said "I'll take it at melt".

I am shocked that sellers don't do the math before they list these on ebay. $3.65 for $5.92 worth of coins good luck to all the cheap mint set bidders and buyers I won't be competing with you all. -MV

The more recent sets are loaded with NIFC coins (and the harder to locate in circulation ATB Quarters) that may make them more attractive for collectors completing series. The only drawback is all of these issues are also issued in many other ways; bags, rolls, sets.

I'd love to be able to get UK Royal Mint Brilliant Uncirculated sets below face value! They tend to stay at or around the issue price, but the Proof Sets from the late 1980s onwards can often be obtained below issue price on the secondary market. The Royal Mint just charges too much for them in the first place.

I bought a 1979 mint set today at the lcs for $5.00 so I could add the halves to my Kennedy set (now complete through 1983), and to upgrade my P & D Carter Quarters. I figured it was a pretty good deal for coins totaling $3.82 face value.
