A co-worker of mine has 3 St. Gaudens double eagles and 4 Liberty head Eagle coins he inherited from a family member. And now he's found that car he wants. He knows I am a small collector and asked me what the best way to sell. So that's the ? I'm asking all of you. He might want to sell in a hurry because of the car, so I gave him the name of the most trust worthy coin dealer on the area IMOP. I also told him to shop around and that I might be interested in giving him the same price as a dealer would. Many of the coins are in EF/AU condition and he might get around spot if they are too worn. He hasn't giving me the dates and mints yet for me to look up a value. And I've only seen two of the coins that included a AU st. Gaudens and EF Eagle. Anyway what's the consensus on how best to sell your gold coins

First is to submit to TPG for certification. I've heard these stories before, and they often end with coins that are either fakes or tourist coins.

I would wait till you have a chance to look up the values then go to the coin shop you recommended. If possible go to one or two more shops just to see what they say. Then at that point you should have an idea of what they are worth and it's up to you who to sell to.

Yeah I might make an offer on one or two. Pretty spendy for me right now. But I'll wait till he sees a couple of coin shop. I don't have the expertise to say if one might be a counterfiet. I would rather he get a good price from the shop I recomended to him. Then we will see about making him an offer for a good one. Thanks for the good advise. I found out two of them are 1927 gardens $20 coins. One of them is a PCGS graded MS62. The other is supose to be a nicer coin. I get to see them tomorrow. Of course he wants to buy the car by this weekend. So it's happening fast. I hate to have him need to seek so fast.

What are the years and from your eye, are they heavily circulated or are they in the AU/Unc. area? Any signficicant rim bumps etc. A common date St. Gaudens (1924, 1927) might not be worth submitting but other dates you'd be crazy not to submit them to a TPG.

I would not put anything on Craigslist. Just looking for bottom feeders and trouble there.

The hard thing with Creigslist is ok you meat the buyer in a public place like a restaurant. Hats to prevent them running out the door with the goods once they got them in hand to look at? You would have to be between them and the door. Yeah Creigslist makes me nervice also

Offer him more than the dealer.

Craigslist: Meet at a bank, police station, or even a coffee shop if you tell the buyer to pose for the camera before any dealings go on. Or hold a piece of ID. Might be impersonal but at least you protect yourself.
