I went into my local Tobacco Shop (please note, I am not condoning smoking), and while in the store, I saw an entire wall covered end to end with very cool wooden cigar boxes. Some of these cigar boxes are unbelievably detailed and expensive-looking boxes, in varying sizes....and some even contained a felt lining!
I asked the manager if she had any "extra" cigar boxes for sale, and she proceeded to GIVE ME 5 cigar boxes for free! 2 of the 5 boxes were nice large boxes with felt linings. They are lacquered cedar wood, with actual screws, hinges, and clasps...very nice quality.
Anyway, I thought I would share this, as I store my graded coins inthe larger ones, and piles of wheat pennies in the 3 smaller ones.

Keep in mind, cigar boxes can tone coins. Also if your coins are just sitting in the box with no protection they can get cabinet wear. Do you have pics? I'd like to see those boxes!

I use pain pill holders 1 oz fits like a glove and can fit 12 coins inside, but I empty maybe 1 container in 6 months so I'm getting more coins than pill holders lol.

True that wood gives off gasses as they age. Also, if laquer, stained, varnished, etc. those too give off gasses as they age. I too did something similar a long time ago but got plastic boxes from a cigar store.

Felt and foam linings are not very good for coins, unfortunately.
But putting a food-safe plastic lining inside should be easy.

For graded coins, and wheat pennies in zip lock bags? you think graded coins and sealed zip lock bags of graded morgans are in jeopardy?

I love the cigar boxes. It's where I keep my spare junk silver and any bullion. My coins are typically in a Dansco. Also, I don't smoke but love storing coin things in cigar boxes because of the look. I have to pay for mine unfortunately.

I've been using cigar boxes for many years to store a variety of things mostly for my other hobbies. They beat the heck out of trying to build storage space for multiple uses. Small parts, coin supplies, and a whole host of other things. Quite durable.
I don't apologize to the people I share my boxes with for have them on hand for their use, and they are very happy to get them.
Sometimes I get them for free and something for a buck or two. At either price you can't build them for the cost you acquire them for. They will protect the items stored within.

I put a Morgan in a ring box long ago and it imparted an absolutely beautiful tone on it.

I'll have to try and see if I can capture some accurate pics. It's an 1896 Morgan my Grandma left to me. She had it placed in her bassinet upon her birth in November 1896 so it didn't circulate much.

I store all of my miscellaneous LWC and LMC rolls in cigar boxes. I also have a lot of junk silver stored in cigar boxes as well. I definitely don't put anything of high value in them, but they're great for storing the misc. rolls.

WheatBack aren't they strong and solid. Wooden boxes are best, you can forget about the cardboard boxes unless your storing paper. The cardboard boxes are great for storing baseball cards.

I suggest if anyone wants to use any wooden boxes for coin storage, try an experiment first. It may take some time but could end up being well worth it. And it is simple. Find a Copper or Brass washer and/or bolt. Yes they are easily found. Simply place them in the box and leave them sit there for a while. A year would be best unfortunately. Something of Silver too would be nice. Anything of Copper should react fast though if there are any corrosive gasses present. And always remember that not all of those boxes are equal. Some may well be old and some new. Some made of almost anything in wood so although someone may say they've been using them for years, theirs may not be what you use. Boxes with Varnish, Stains, Lacquer or anything used to finish the wood may well leak gasses for a long time.

At some of my coin meetings' auctions, people will put a lot of foreign coins to sell in them. I buy them because of the box, but I also enjoy the coins, too!
