So in the past few months, I've spent more money on books than actual coins.. Heres the list of books I'm trying to get ahold of: Penny Whimsy by SheldonUnited State Copper Cents 1816-1857 by Howard NewcombThe CENT Book by John D. Wright Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of Early US Cents 1793-1814 by Walter Breen The Die Varieties of United States Large Cents 1840-1857 by Grellman United States Large Cents 1793-1814 by Noyes United States Large Cents 1816-1839 by NoyesGrading Guide for Early American Copper Coins (2014)Yesterday I bought the EACs grading book and today I scored a used copy of Noyes second book for $75 on ebay! I'm out of the game for a while while I recoup these funds (life of a college kid) but in the meantime I'll try to identify the variety of the cents I already have! I cant wait for the Noyes book to get here! I've heard nothing but good things about it. EDIT: Here is a good deal on a pair of the Noyes books http://www.ebay.com/itm/United-Stat...em1e8f54e0deEdited by Hambone 08/01/2014 2:39 pm

Congrats on your book purchases. $75 for a Noyes book was a bargain from what I've seen them going for. I too purchased the EAC Copper Grading book it was well worth the cost. It was the first book purchased that deals with early copper coins. I think you'll enjoy it. I will eventually add colonial, Half Cent and large cent reference books to my library. -MV

I have the first two Noyes volumes, still waiting to purchase the early 2 volumes in color and his newest volumes 5 & 6 on the mid to later date cents. I have a few good ones to add if you want to delve further into the Large Cent research. One is up for auction here on CCF a compilation of writings put together by Silberman & Lapp. I also recommend any of John W. Adams.

MeadowviewCollector: I'd love to learn more about the colonial issues, I probly need to get a couple books on that subject as well.
Are there a lot of good pictures in the EAC grading book? I love to see some nice cents, especially the ones that I may never be able to obtain.
Westcoin: Is the noyes book I purchased in color, or is it in b&w?
What are some books you'd recommend that won't devastate my wallet like the noyes books? It seems all books about large cents have gone up significantly in the past few months.

Yes, the photos are high quality. One of my favorite sections showed grading photos of the Chain cent from FR-2 to MS-60.
The book was well worth it.

Quote: Westcoin: Is the noyes book I purchased in color, or is it in b&w? B&W, however, the photographs are about the best quality you can get. I agree get the EAC Grading guide, the photos in that are amazing and it's a good read for learning the in's and out's of EAC grading, plus it covers Colonials too. I'd suggest getting a copy of Heritage Auctions Long Beach Coin Auction catalog #460 February 15th, 2008 the Walter J. Husak Collection of US Large Cents. The catalog is cheap, but the special edition Husak collection only one seems to go for a lot of money on Amazon, too much at around $250+ I paid $15 for my copy from an EAC member. just keep an eye out, one will turn up the collection is also featured in the main catalog, just not as large of photos. Walter had just about every single Sheldon number large Cent in high grade, and Heritage did an outstanding job putting this catalog together. Makes for a great reference to have.

That looks like a great reference to have westcoin, I'll keep an eye out for it. I was going to get that large cent book you had listed on here, but the time on the website was an hour off so I didn't get to bid again

Those Noyes books sure are nice, but expensive! The Walter Breen Large Cent book is online for free at PCGS under resources (though getting a copy in hand is easier than using it online) you can at least read it, and see if it is something you want to drop a $100 on, I paid $125 from a seller on ebay last year for a new copy. The CENT book by John D. Wright, is even better than the Noyes books for middle dates IMO. Grellman has a new version and not the one he co-wrote with Reivers, I have the one they co-wrote, need to upgrade to the newer book, I hear it has more color photos and is better in printing quality. If you like Half Cents, then You'll need Cohen's Little Sisters 2nd edition, Breen's encyclopedia of US Half Cents and Manley's Die State book. all but Breen's encyclopedia can be tough and expensive to get. Greg Heim's Quickfinder on Half Cents is a godsend when attributing them. Also get a copy of Goldberg's sale of the Missouri Cabinet collection of Half Cents, the finest and complete set ever put together, it has the best coin photography I've every seen anywhere in print. I'm looking for a hardbound copy, as I waited too long to order one from Goldberg's last November.
