pre-'60 nickels seem to be a favorite to keep as they are 50 years old
pre~1981 cents if you want to hoard copper
'58 and under are wheats
anything with an S mintmark (some are proofs, others not, but you can find that out when you have a few)
pre-'65 for quarters and dimes. (they are silver)
pre 1971 halves are also silver

what do you want in your collection really is the question? are you going for a profit? are you making a set? there are WAM pennies, wide rim SBAs... all kinds of varieties including 7 of the 1982 cent (some are copper, some are zinc like 1983 and up)

edit: ugh, typos..

Your killing me here, what you trying to do make 70 years old?

What shadz meant to say was pre-60's nickles. Some on here will say that they are not worth keeping while others, including myself keep them. These as well as what shadz has stated will help you out with the cents and others denominations.

Kaboel!

The folks above have pointed you in a general direction and to key resources to develop your own specific list of collectables. There are more sites to explore for each denomination that interests you, so putting together simple searches should yield volumes of reading. Don't forget to use the Search tool here to look up details on a particular question you have and if you can't find answers, the folks here are quite knowledgeable and willing to help.

Good luck!!

I also like nickels, some other things to look for are "Full Steps" on Monticello, I keep those if they are old enough. I've been lucky enough to find a few proofs. Also I have been researching online and have read that there is a '90 missing FS, and the Cherry Picker guide lists a '63 TDR and a '64D repunched mintmark, I've also heard to keep '68, '69, and '70s with no mintmarks.
Good Luck

Not much of a hunter but one of the first things I do when examining modern coinage is flip a coin back and forth looking for die rotation discrepancies.
