Hi all. I'm brand new to the site, and only slightly overwhelmed. I was just given a large collection of coins, and I am very new to coin collecting. In looking through it, there are a lot of coin sets (penny, nickel, quarter, etc from the same year). However there are a lot of other individual items.

There are two highlights that I'd like to start with. First, I have a USA 1887 gold $1 coin. It appears to be in excellent condition. I know nothing about coin grading, although I have been an active baseball card and memorabilia collector for 30 years.

I also have a USA 1886 gold $5 coin. It too appears to be in excellent condition.

There is a local coin dealer, but from what I've read, I likely won't get full retail for them. I've looked on ebay, but there are a lot of similar coins for sale.

To start with, I have 2 questions:

1) Should I send my coins into PCGS and have them graded? Is it expensive to do that?

2) Where is the best place to try to sell these coins? ebay? Or a forum such as one like this?

Thank you all in advance for your assistance. If I've posted this in the wrong forum, of I've done anything wrong, please let me know. Like I said, I'm a bit overwhelmed and looking to experts such as you for some guidance and direction. Thank you from Indiana!

You did the right thing by joining the CCF.
Post some large pictures of the two coins on- Classic coin grading section(front and back). Our members will grade and offer estimated value of the coins(only opinions). From there you can ask additional questions.

Only if the coin (graded) is worth more than the coin (raw). Only coins worth a few hundred dollars and up are potentially worthwhile having graded and the expenses. Post the coins in the relevant sub-forum and we will give your our opinions on grade and whether it should be sent off to a TPG.

Probably ebay (unless it is something rare and valuable) but you need good clear pictures and a good reputation as a seller to get top dollar.

Hope this helps. to the forum!

to the Forum!!

Unless you're absolutely desperate for cash right now, selling your newly acquired collection immediately is probably a bad idea.

As everyone else has said, slowing down and learning what your collection contains is your best move.

This Forum can help enormously. There are many smart collectors that can offer advice.

And, you never know, you might just become a collector yourself!

Again welcome!

I have posted pictures in the appropriate forums. Thank you all for your help and support. I'm still WAY overwhelmed, but I'll take your advice and just move slowly and steadily.
