I am interested in eventually picking up a couple of pieces, some modern US issue, and maybe a couple of the major 1oz international issues over time (probably a long time), such as Canada, China, etc. I came across the $5 Indian Head Half Eagle, and thought it might also be an interesting smaller sized piece to add to the mix. I noticed APMEX and Provident Metals have the $5 in AU condition for sale and was wondering if anyone here had good experiences with them and thinks the pricing is reasonable. I am not that into slabbed stuff, but I am also wondering if it's better to spend more on something judged to be in MS condition. I have not been an active collector, but have always had a coin collection of sorts with some silver dollars from my grandfather and other coins since I was a kid. Any thoughts on how to pick up one of these? Thanks

Spend a few dollars and look for an aggressive priced common date in MS on ebay. Or negotiate with a member of this forum should someone come along to the thread with an interest to sell.

Good luck on your journey.

I love those coins. I once bought a random date from APMEX in an AU grade and the coin that I got was pretty ugly. I think their pricing is fair but if you want something good looking, I'd pick out an individual coin on ebay like mentioned above. I think its worth it to get a slabbed coin.

Thanks for the advice. I agree, I thin it's a pretty unique design. I'm still not sure about slabbed stuff... I guess I don't like the presentation on the holders and it would be nice to be able to handle it and they have a large premium. Do you think it's worth trying to get an ungraded one on ebay, or would fakes or other issues be a big concern with this type of coin?

coinio,
Do you have access to a brick and mortar coin shop? If so,
I bet the dealer would listen to your request and offer you an example.
An AU Indian gold coin is really a bullion piece plus a small premium because it is a real coin.
Also, you do not sound like a person interested in 'slabbed perfection.' There is a lot of pleasure
to be had in holding a gold coin which was USED to buy something.

I defer to others to recommend a seller online.

That's a good suggestion. I would look at a local shop, but honestly the two shops near me aren't too inviting to buy at. One of them only really gets gold coins they buy from the public, so last time I went they didn't have much to choose from. Another I thought had closed after a robbery, but it actually looks like it is now open. I do appreciate high quality, but I am guessing finding a nicer coin for this series raw might be somewhat difficult.
