I have a sestertius with a few cracks that range from small to downright tiny along the length of the edge, and a lot of them are filled with a green substance that seems to rub off. Its more of a shamrock or pigment green color (I thought describing it as "dark green" would have been too broad so I check shades of green on Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catego...des_of_green ), but it still rubs off, so I'm hoping it is simply minute traces of green gunk. I need a magnifying glass to see the green inside the cracks properly. And the tips on picks I use are too big to get into the cracks.

It hasn't spread fortunately since I got it (a year ago), but I'd like the stuff gone just in case. What would be good ways to getting the stuff out? I'm guessing one effective way would be to dip/heat my coin up? I would consider that to be a last resort, since I'd rather not ruin its nice, brown color.

I'll try later in the evening to get photos of the coin and its edge

Try removing it with a soft bristle brush like a toothbrush. If that works the either rub in a little olive oil or wax to coat the coin.

These were the best I could do. Kind of hard to see but they're there in the photos, as the tiny green dots on the edge, in the small cracks:

Thanks echizento. I think I got some of it out of the not-so-deep cracks, but the bristles weren't able to get the green in the deeper cracks.

Hard to tell but I don't think it's BD. Looks like you got most of what it is anyway. I think it will be OK, just check it from time to time and if it comes back than it's BD if not your all set.

If the stuff hasn't spread and started ruining the coin by now then yeah, I figure also it probably isn't BD. Thanks echizento.

I have had BD in some little nooks and crannies like that. just keep an eye on it, if it progresses, maybe do a Verdi-care dip?
