Interesting - I don't think all the issue prices are quite right - the Churchill crown was sold at face value (5 shillings or 25p) and the cupro-nickel Queen Mother £5 coin was available at face value - the £9.95 version was a specimen one sold in a pack.
I bank at the HSBC and have occasionally deposited commemorative £5 coins in my account, with no trouble.
I agree about the more recent coins being a rip-off. The seignorage on a £5 coin must make it profitable for the mint to sell them at face value - but recent ones have only been available at a premium.

Daughter traveled to Northern Ireland with her college this spring. Sent her with over 100 pounds from the 6/$1 junk box -- mostly 1 and 2 pound coins, with some 50 and 20 pence coins that she was able to trade for currency while there. I did purchase a 5 pound commemorative out of the box -- she bought a scarf for 4 pounds at a fair in Belfast, and got a pound back in change. Not bad for 17 cents.

I've bought coins for below their price a few times, was offered a pound coin in zimbabwe for $1 but gave more than $1 because I don't like making loads of profit out of poor people who struggle to make a living.

The local coin store buys them for 5 cents each, sell them for 6 (now 5) for a dollar. The problem is, no one accepts the coins in the US for exchange. But, if someone you know goes overseas, then it can be a bargain, if you are patient.

I have a whole load of Iraqi currency that I gathered from a couple of extended stays to the area. I'm hoping they are worth something one day?!

I have about $35 of Australian Dollars ($0.50, $1 and $2) that I got from the 5/$1 Bin at my Local Coin Dealer, I'll probably be going there for Vacation sometime in the next 2 years so I can put them to good use.
