Hey everyone just wanted to share my new purchase which I am absolutely ecstatic about.
New-Kassander-Athena-Bronze
New-Kassander-Athena-Bronze
Not just any Kassander Bronze but an Athena/Bow and Club Bronze. This coin is rare as they were only minted in a very short period as an emergency issue overstruck primarily over the Shield/Helmet series. This coin was minted immediately prior to the Battle of Ipsus which was one of the largest Battles between the Macedonian Diadochs Kassander, Seleucus I Nikator and Lysimachos in a coalition against Antigonas and Demetrious in which the coalition won decisively due to the use of elephants disrupting the opposing cavalry. The reason for the emergency issue was that bronze was in short supply most likely due to the manufacture of weapons and armour immediately prior to the battle linking this coin to it which is an absolute bonus.

As this coin was an emergency issue it was only produced for a very limited time and in very limited quantities (with no varieties for any of the denominations it was struck in) only for the population to be reduced over time due to a number of factors particularly bronze's instability in the ground.

As such this coin type has been excessively rare on the market with only 5 different coins being confirmed sold over the past 14 years (this coin being one of them) with pictures being available for only those 5 coins. As such the population of this coin would have to be significantly less than 50 and perhaps more like twenty available to the collecting community. This coin type has grown on the collecting community as it has increased exponentially over the past two years with one sold for $266 at Heritage Auctions in 2012 only for another one to be sold for $760 at CNG in 2013 both of which were in VF.

Overall I think I did well on purchasing this coin for approximately $350 and it would not be a bad coin to add to my Alexander the Great of Macedonia Tet. Sorry for going on for so long just absolutely pumped about the purchase. Opinions are welcome.

Thanks and pishpash nice spot don't know why my link didn't work but 5 dollars cheaper is nice. But cause where I am from it would cost quite a bit on sending the money over by transfer so have to bundle it with a few more coins of theirs.

interesting story, had no idea about the history of the coin. would have guessed in was a budget macedonian of some type. interesting that you can see the original coin design so well (is it called an understrike?) with the overstrike.

Dont know the exact terminology but that would make sense (parts of the older strike also attracted me to the coin) and it certainly aint budget had to pay $350 looking for a few more Macedonian coins primarily of the Diadochs. Anyone want to recommend a few dealers which may be able to help (tried sixbid, numisbid and vcoins)
