I agree with John1. It looks like a D that has been damaged.

Looks like a S when you blow it up

the bottom of s has huge ball that got a hit or damage

Not an 1971-S as San Francisco only minted proofs that year; it's a Denver minted coin with a hit to the D. It's worth face value.

The only S mint marked circulation strike nickels after 1954 are dated 1968, 1969 or 1970.
