I have one of the Criswell 4A notes. It has a vertical stamp on the center of the reverse "Prior to 1st, Nov'br 1861." Anyone have any idea what this is for being that the note was issued on 1st January 1862 on the obverse.
Good question. Can't really tell, perhaps you can provide a larger image of the stamp. It is likely a stamp from the bank that redeemed the interest that was due, which I think is really cool. The holders of these notes were smart to redeem any interest that was owed them at the time, since the notes eventually went worthless.
