I was looking at it and I can't tell if its just a picture anomaly or its been whizzed because it definately looks like there is buildup around the arrows and all the letters on the reverse and the date. I am almost positive it is a whizzed coin but figured I would ask others opinions before I jump to conclusions. anyhow here is the link http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...e=osi_widget

On the reverse, there's some definite build-up going on at the 'Half Dol.'

I would have put this in the auction section but if is whizzed I thought maybe it could teach some of the youngsters something and I know not everyone checks the other parts of the forum like they do the main coin area but if any of the other moderators or MOM or DAD feels it should be moved do not hesitate to do so, just thought I would let everyone know why I put it here instead of there in the first place

Definately looks cleaned---never buy without a return guarantee--sometimes the photos on a website don't quite represent the coin in the right way--(ie:greater magnification might reveal whizz lines)Still it is a fine looking half.

I can't say whether or not it's been whizzed, but that buildup on the reverse is absolutely something I wouldn't want to find out about the hard way. Between the iffy coin, and the 100+ Negatives that seller's gotten, I wouldn't touch this one with a 10-foot pole.

I'm with Dave on this one. This is not modern math, two negatives are not a positive. I am not of the opinion that it is wizzed, but cleaned it is. Jim

I just know when a coin is whizzed you usually have buildup around the details of the coin because they stop close to the details as not to remove more detail than is already gone, and I have seen others that show no whizzed lines show buildup like this coin shows which has been whizzed

Bryan, I don't think the problem is whizzing. I think you're looking at a counterfeit! The numbers and letters are too large (thick) and non-uniform for this series. Also check the reverse rim (bottom) and you'll see that it wasn't a centered strike. Here's the genuine article. Note the denticles are incused precisely ... check the reverse denticles on your example.

I agree with seatednut here comparing the two pictures I would have to say the ebay coin is fake or altered to the point where is no longer a collectible example.

SeatedNut may be on to something here.

Bryan, You are a great and humble man. I live for the seated half series and have considerable experience with the nuances. When I first looked at this coin I knew something was not kosher ... and yes it has been whizzed too! I've seen and sadly, purchased counterfeits in this series. Most of the counterfeit Seated halves in common dates were made long ago and where done by skilled craftsmen. Not like the modern Chinese cast fakes you see constantly in the Seated dollar series. The intent of the counterfeiters was to make a 50 cent coin for less than 5 cents and earn a 45 cent profit. And you are not alone ... I learn something new every day on this forum ... isn't it great!

If it is not very harshly cleaned, and possibly even tooled to some extent, it would have to be a forgery in my opin.

BTW I would look at his feedback on toolhaus first, it can be an interesting and volumetric read.

I am reminded of a quote from one of my favorite Seinfeld episodes; "fake, fake, fake". I have never see a reverse rim on a Seated Half that looks like that one. I would bail.
