Old Abe keeps surprising me as a Dutchie.

Today I have found at an fleamarket in Rotterdam two regular cents of 1980 and 1982, in cupronickel. It costed me 5 eurocents each.

Are there many nickel Abe's in circulation, because I was thought to believe that the contents should be 5 % zinc and 95% copper....?

The 1980 and even possibly the 1982 Lincolns are copper ,, with the possibility of the 1982 being the new composition of copper plated zinc.

there are no cupro-nickel Lincolns that are produced by the US mint.

These coins are more than likely replated .

do you have pictures ?

Odds are about 99.9999% that they have been plated after leaving the mint. About the only way they could be coppernickel would be if they were struck on dime planchets in which case you should be able to see the copper core if you look at the edge.

Also possible but rare is the 100% unplated planchet (zinc, but still could be silverish in color) that gets struck as a cent. Rare.

Especially rare for a 1980, two years before they started making zinc cents.
