There has been quite a bit of posting and talking about 3CNs lately. Started looking at mine for the first time really closely. I never really looked at it for any amount of time other than see a $50 price tag and filling a hole in my 7070 with a MS coin. I believe the first "I" shows some wear not from circulation but from the dies.

Upon inspection, I noticed some really clear clash marks on it, which appear to be DDO and DDR!

My question is "are these common amongst 3CNs or do I have something special?"

I am posting some pictures of my 3CN to show what I am talking about. I have the regular picture of the obverse and then upside down horizontally flipped reverse. I also did this with an inverse picture of the coin to help reveal this clashing but also makes the best coin look bad.

3CN-Clashes...

It's hard to see on the photo above but in the inverse picture it can be clearly seen the doubling of the reverse clash near the chin and above the "6" where the wreathes come together (I call it 'lightning 6') on the obverse.

3CN-Clashes...

On the reverse next to the first "I" you can see the complete profile of the obverse of Liberty's head as well as the hair next to the third "I".

Clashing is prevalent among 3CN through the 1860's. It was less frequent after that. The Mint finally got their act together. Probably, the doubling you're seeing is Longacre doubling and very common among virtually the entire series (if not the entire series!). There are some different variations of the doubling and in certain years various elements are strongly doubled and command higher premiums.

it is harder to find a 3cn that is not clashed than it is to find one that is. Mine has some major clashing going on on it also where you can see the whole outline of liberty on the reverse and other details pretty much like yours

I see no evidence of a DDO or DDR. The doubling of the clash marks is simply because the dies clashed two different occaisions and there was a slight shifting of the dies between the clashes. There may be a little evidence of some Longacre doubling but I can't be sure about that.

Nice Coins Nelrak! I have a 1865 with the same clash marks, but only in AU condition.

I also have an 1866 with the same clash marks and what appears a RPD, the last 6 looks misplaced and misshapened like maybe it was a 5 at one point. Is anybidy aware of a variety like that? I don't have any reference books to compare it with.
