This week I bought some coins. One of them is a big as of Janus, 30,7 grams, date struck +/- 210BC diameter (still) unknown till I will receive it. Its a type I was watching already for a while. The reason I bought it as well is because I would love to try cleaning it, I think its possible to improve it pretty much with some soaking in distilled water. The second one I bought is from a dealer I did business before. A denarius of janus (again) 119BC VF? 19mm. Obverse Legend : M FOVRI L F Obverse Description : laureate head of Janus Reverse Legend : ROMA PHILI Reverse Description : Roma in Corinthian helmet standing left, holding scepter in left hand and crown in right, star above head, trophy before surmounted by boar´s-head helmet, holding sword and rectangular shield, two rectangular shields and two carnyces on ground Edited by Dutchgulden 08/12/2014 4:10 pm

Two very nice coins Dutch, be careful when you clean the AS as not to remove the patina. You all are killing me lately, so many excellent coins have been showing up on the board. I wish I had something to add, but my coin buying days will be on hold for quite some time.

email me Ron, might have something for you here. And I agree, if you can clean that and leave the tone it will be a stunning coin.

The color is superb. It may have been bathed in oil or otherwise treated with an oil. You may need to give it an alcohol or acetone treatment to 'dry' it before you use water. I would have grabbed it if I had seen it ! I have one of similar weight but it is a mere 'runt' compared.
The silver coin is nice too .........

How do you use acetone to clean Furius? Not used it before but thinking of trying it so a method would be handy

Simply submerge the coin in a airtight glass jar. Acetone is extremely volatile and the fumes can detonate ! So extinguish all 'smoking' materials. Glass is important too as acetone can melt many types of plastic. A day in the bath will remove any oils which may be present or even which may have penetrated the material which you would like to remove. It is also quite the desiccant and will leave the surface 'bone dry'.
