How many coins is "a whole lot"? You might have stumbled on a Roman-era hoard if you have more than 10-20 coins. If you believe that to be the case, you might consider phoning in an expert. Not sure of the property laws in the UK, but I don't think they can keep any of the coins without compensating you for them. This could be the contents of a coin purse dropped 1700 years ago, or it could be much more significant from an archaeological standpoint. Either way, be careful and consult an expert if you find gold, jewelry, or human remains.

You have things from too many eras and geographical locations to be an ancient hoard. You may have stumbled onto someone's hidden collection or a burglar's loot.

Agreed--most of these coins seem to be of Middle Eastern origin, so most likely something brought over by a tourist. Most of the coins are holed so I am thinking they were a necklace at one point. I'd post the rest in this forum with bigger pictures... looks like some of this might be somewhat valuable.

Were these in any sort of container or bag when you found them?

If it were me, which it isn't, I wouldn't keep them very close to, or IN that Styrofoam for a New York City Heartbeat. Hope your not.

EDIT: I cant spell.
