Hello,

I recently noticed that some coins I bought a few months ago have some sort of discoloration in areas on the coin. When I bought them they did not have any of these "colored areas". They have been encapsulated since before I received the coins.
I have the images below and was wondering if anyone could help me understand what I am seeing.

Any information you can provide would be very helpful.

First, welcome to CCF! Hopefully, you will enjoy your experience enough to continue being part of it!

Would it be possible for you to post images that show more accurate color? It may help us "diagnose" what is going on with the coin.

That said, it appears likely that the coin's capsule was opened at some point and the coin was exposed to external elements. It definitely looks like something has come in contact with the coin's surface and "stained" it. It does not appear to be natural toning.

It's also possible that something could have come in contact with the coin before it left the Mint. Based on what you've said in your post, however, it appears that the damage/discoloration has become visible only since you recently purchased the coin. Considering the coin is 20 years old, it is unlikely that the contamination happened at the Mint and waited until very recently to surface.

Considering the low value of the coin (it is a common modern commemorative), I would take the coin out of its capsule and soak it in acetone for a few minutes and then use a cotton swab (dipped in the acetone) to gently try and remove the stains. If it works - great! If it doesn't - you haven't lost much. Acetone will not damage the coin's surface, but it will help remove surface contaminants.

I had actually taken many pictures and none of them showed the colors.

This was the coin that had the most staining. The colors are blue, purple, and a little light green. I don't know if that helps.

I have four more coins that came in the same purchase.
Should I still remove the coins that have significantly less of this staining?

Thanks for the suggestion.
