Hi guys, have a 1935 Sixpence up for an opinion. I'd like our American friends to give a grade opinion as well as I'm trying to learn the American grading system also.

Keep in mind parts of this coin are weakly struck which may be deceptive as wear points. It was graded by ACGS as ... well I'll tell in a little while, but what they gave it seems a little off.

Not an easy one to apply Sheldon numbers to as I have seen too few.
I would put it in the MS range. There is a rim ding and several small nicks on the Obv. A couple spots and some nicks on the REV.
If I had so assign a number I would go conservative and say MS63 but would not be surprised to hear it was within a couple of points of this.

The crown looks mushy, but I'd attribute that to strike quality, since wear should not appear in that area (I should think) until the ear and higher areas of the clothing appear worn. Those spots to not seem to show wear. The very highest points of the reverse show a little flatness, but that is consistent enough to attribute to strike also. I'm guessing (not knowing the issue) that the lettering on the reverse would be an early indicator of wear.

I agree with Richard that this is an Uncirculated coin. If I'm learning international grading standards correctly, strike quality becomes a factor in grading at a much lower grade than in the U.S. style, so this coin would probably grade bUnc (barely Uncirculated ). In the U.S., I'm thinking Richard has the grade correct. ACGS called it 65 or 66.

Thanks very much for your comments. You may be surprised to know ACGS gave it only au50. Yes we thought it was better too. We are curious to know what PCGS would think.

Anyway, I wonder if I may try another, this one a 1952 George VI Sixpence. Has started to colour/tone in the 2x2.

1952 and 1953 6d's are notoriously softly struck coins. The flatness of the emu feathers do not preclude an UNC grade, nor the rounded star, neither does the flatness of the hair above the ear. The cheek and eyebrow look clear too. So I'll say UNC. But in hand it could be a aUNC if the nature of the lustre changes through any of the regions I've mentioned above.

Thanks Mark. The soft strikes can be tricky.

I think it is aUNC due to the hair above Georges ear.

It's pretty hard grading from a photo I realise. Looks like the difference between aUnc and Unc can only be seen in hand.
