hi everyone,

have been googling and reading your forums without finding the info I was after for the 1981 trans-canada railway silver dollar.

i acquired this here in new zealand for an actual nz dollar. it was sold online centred in a cork drinks coaster with a poor photo and even worse description. it was fairly tarnished when it arrived, but a quick rub on my sleeve removed the worst of that. the value isn't something I'm too concerned about, as its not something I would sell.

first question:
is the train shown based on an actual loco from back in the day? I'm a railfan and have read several books on canadas rail history, so keen to know if I may have read of the loco shown.

second:
what, if anything, is the silver content please?

many thanks in advance.
charley

Yours is the Brilliant Uncirculated variety. The lower mintage one. This is the first year they were issued in Proof and BU instead of just Specimen as previously. 0.375 Troy oz ASW.

The information presented by the RCM about the coin when it was released stated: "the coin depicts an early steam locomotive used to link the Canadian East to the Pacific."

So, the locomotive was not specifically named in their press release.

That said, the design shown on the coin definitely appears to be closely based on Engine 371, the Canadian Pacific Railway locomotive that pulled the first train on the newly completed Transcontinental Railway (the train arrived in Port Moody, BC on November 8, 1885).

Hope that helps!
