Penny CHR (Coin roll hunting):
50c a roll (50 coins), $25 a box (50 rolls)
When going for these, look for what is called a "
Wheat penny". These are pennies minted from 1909-1958. They can be EASILY id.ed by the different reverse of two ears of wheat and a giant "ONE CENT" on the back. Just keep any one you find. Same with any old penny that is uncirculated and lustrous ("shiny").
IF you find a penny that had an Indian head on it or a birdie on it, those are
Indian Head cents (1859-1909) and
Flying Eagle cents (1856-1858)respectively. Those are pretty hard to find and are lucked based if you find any. IF you do find any, keep them!
Nickel CHR:
$2 a roll (40 coins), $100 a box (50 rolls)
When dealing with
Jefferson nickels (1938-present date), you got your pre WWII dates (38-42), your 35% nickel dates (you can tell if they are silver if they have a large P,D,or S over the building on the reverse of the coin, years 1942-1945), and then your after WWI dates.
Dimes:
$5 a roll (50 coins), $250 a box (50 rolls)
The only thing to note is silver, proofs, or if you are REALLY lucky, silver proofs. Look at the edge of the coin and if it is all gray, hen you got silver.
Quarters:
$10 a roll (40 coins), $500 a box (50 rolls)
Silver, proofs, or if you are interested,
State Quarters (50 diff designs), 2009 US Territory quarters (6 diff designs), or the new "American the Beautiful" quarters (5-6 diff designs per year).
Half Dollars:
%10 a roll (20 coins), $500 a box (50 rolls)
Chances are, you gotta order these from the bank as they won't usually have them in stock. The big thing is looking for 90% silver halves (ONLY the year 1964) and 40% halves (1965-1970). Just look at the edges/dates.
Sometimes, you might find a dime in a penny roll, which is cool, sometimes, you will find a penny in a nickel roll, which is uncool (throws off your amount) and sometimes, you will find foreign coins. Keep those. Why? WHY NOT! You're a COIN collector like the rest of us now
