Welcome, if you want a folder or denomination to search for I would recommend searching nickels I love liking through nickels. There isn't too many hard Key key dates to find just a couple. Make sure to look out for silver War Nickels 1942 through 1945 with big mint marks on back , Buffalo nickels and proofs as well.

I would buy the 2015 Red Book, and that should help you out some.

Penny CHR (Coin roll hunting):

50c a roll (50 coins), $25 a box (50 rolls)

When going for these, look for what is called a " Wheat penny". These are pennies minted from 1909-1958. They can be EASILY id.ed by the different reverse of two ears of wheat and a giant "ONE CENT" on the back. Just keep any one you find. Same with any old penny that is uncirculated and lustrous ("shiny").
IF you find a penny that had an Indian head on it or a birdie on it, those are Indian Head cents (1859-1909) and Flying Eagle cents (1856-1858)respectively. Those are pretty hard to find and are lucked based if you find any. IF you do find any, keep them!

Nickel CHR:

$2 a roll (40 coins), $100 a box (50 rolls)

When dealing with Jefferson nickels (1938-present date), you got your pre WWII dates (38-42), your 35% nickel dates (you can tell if they are silver if they have a large P,D,or S over the building on the reverse of the coin, years 1942-1945), and then your after WWI dates.

Dimes:

$5 a roll (50 coins), $250 a box (50 rolls)

The only thing to note is silver, proofs, or if you are REALLY lucky, silver proofs. Look at the edge of the coin and if it is all gray, hen you got silver.

Quarters:

$10 a roll (40 coins), $500 a box (50 rolls)

Silver, proofs, or if you are interested, State Quarters (50 diff designs), 2009 US Territory quarters (6 diff designs), or the new "American the Beautiful" quarters (5-6 diff designs per year).

Half Dollars:

%10 a roll (20 coins), $500 a box (50 rolls)

Chances are, you gotta order these from the bank as they won't usually have them in stock. The big thing is looking for 90% silver halves (ONLY the year 1964) and 40% halves (1965-1970). Just look at the edges/dates.

Sometimes, you might find a dime in a penny roll, which is cool, sometimes, you will find a penny in a nickel roll, which is uncool (throws off your amount) and sometimes, you will find foreign coins. Keep those. Why? WHY NOT! You're a COIN collector like the rest of us now

Also when hunting through cents look out for the 1943 steel cent, put that together with the War Nickels (mint mark above Monticello, a bit of silver) and you have a neat "World War 2" set.

I used to make a bit of spending money back in the day by picking out American pennies from my change when the American dollar was killing the Canadian dollar. You can probably still find old Canadian cents in America. You should get a cheap Whitman folder for all the Canadians you find too. Just a nice diversion from your main set.

Some people also hoard American pennies by metal content. I believe in the states the metal comp was changed in 1982 to what you call a "Zincoln".

A good guide for beginners of American coins is Fun times Guide . com's U.S. Coin page. Have fun

One suggestion.....regularly read the other coin roll hunting threads by denominations. There are die varieties to look for. Also there are oddities out there, like mis-aligned dies, rotations, counterstamps, Cuds, filled dies, etc.

Had best luck in silver quarters and dime rolls. Sellers show both end coins and if the roll is not sold blind, I have found several great coins in addition to the known. It costs a bit more, but the 90% silver retains a good value and can repack and recover as junk. Just a thought.

I have question. Interested in the custom photo setups I have seen you post and answer questions. Could I find out more about that? Thanks RWA
