I came across this coin some time ago. It is in low grade, with a fairly smooth and nicely toned obverse, but a slightly grainy and mushy reverse.
Still, it is all there, and I was quite happy to find it and was ready to pay much more than what it finally went for.
Can anybody guess why?

I guess because it is a solid coin with natural surfaces. As far as variety I'm calling it an S-139 which is an R1. Sheldon calls it "Far the commonest 1797".

Don't know where you're getting S-139. 124 would be my first guess. What's the rarity on that? R-5? R-5+?

Looks more like an S-124, R-6- to me.

Edit: It appears the updated rarity rating is R-5+.

Do you own it or looking to buy it?

If it is an R6 and you don't already own it go for it if the price is right.

Germanics, great coin from the vault again! I do not know copper grading that well but I imagine this falls into the G6/VG8 category. I love your collection.
Rest in Peace

Thank you for the comments. Finding this coin was a stroke of luck.
I guess that many people did not attributed it at all, or attributed it incorrectly, probably due to the poor pictures. In fact, as Breen mentions in his book, S-139 (R-1) is often confused with S-124 (R5+ in latest CQR). I myself have an S-139 which lay in my collection misattributed as S-124 for almost 15 years, until I looked at it more closely once I had the Breen book. This one is, I am happy to say, the real thing.

S-124 is scarce, but low grade examples (mostly lower than this one) do come up every now and then. S-124's in ca. Fine or better, on the other hand, are very scarce.
