Found this Wheatie at an old CCC Camp at about 7000' above sea level last week.
Its in rough shape but I have carefully cleaned it enough to see that it is either a 1943 or 1945.
I hear olive oil soaking is a good way to clean. Does anyone have a better way of cleaning?

If it's magnetic then it's a 43 for sure, from the picture I can't tell if it's copper color or rust.

Cool find. I don't think you want to use olive oil on coins. Have you tried acetone?

Maybe someone else will come along and have a better cleaning/preservation method.

Olive oil is used on coins all the time. You could start with an acetone soak for a few minutes and the back into the oil. Olive oil take a lot of soaking time.

To clean your copper penny's use scotch tape, pencil in all the cracks. Then tear tape off. Repeat this until all green is removed.

Scottshotfind,
to CCF fellow Michigander. I have never heard of that before. Have you done it? Any before/after pics?

I used to do the hot peroxide bath on my dug Large Cents and IH's. Next I would soak in olive oil. I determined I was ruining my coins with this method. Coppers would darken so that detail became non-existant.

Olive oil is an organic compound, and acidic. Unless the oil is neutralized in some way, the copper will develop pitting over time.

A better choice would be mineral oil.
