In the final years of Ardashir's life he put his smartest and most level headed son on the throne as the king of kings of Iran. He would go one to defeat 3 Roman emperors in battle and immortalize himself in various rock reliefs through out the Persian empire. During his reign he would force the Romans from Mesopotamia and bring the Western Kushan Empire under Persian rule. During his reign Persia would stretch from the Caucus Mountains to the Indus Valley. This is both a replacement and an upgrade to a Shapur I once had. Its good that he has returned to the collection accompanied by his father.

Persia, The Sassanid Kingdom
Ctesiphon, Iraq
Shapur I The Great King Shah of Persia (240 -272 AD)
AR Drachm 24.5 mm x 4.11 grams
Obv. Bust of Shapur I right with earring; crown with ear flap. Pahlavi script- "The Mazda Worshiper. the divine Shapur, King of Kings of Iran whom descended from the Gods.
Rev. Zoroastrian Alter with Two Attendants.-Pahlavi script-"The Fire of Shapur"
ref: Gobl I/1

Very nice coin. We tend to overlook this type but I find them really interesting especially how these rulers where able to defeat the mighty Roman Empire.

Ron, this exactly why these coins intereat me. Compared to the Roman coins from the mid 3rd century to the mid 7th century the Persian coins are far superior in purity and manufacture. A style of coin adopted and reinvented many times in the succeeding millennium.

Hey Pish,

These coins I found the 'bay being sold out of London. It was originally a lot of 3 coins the Ardashir and two Shapur I coins. So I took a gamble and asked the seller if she would consider breaking up the lot and selling me two of the pieces. Shes agreed to a mutually fair price and a week later I have two much better in hand Sassanid Drachms. I found it extremely difficut to improve on her photos and I still dont believe I captured the true beauty of the pieces. I am glad there are at least two other people left on the board that will comment on my odd coins. HAHA.

I tend to concentrate on the Greek and Roman coins, ignoring stuff like Islamic, I probably miss stuff like yours. I will have to keep my eyes open!
