I purchased a new Dansco album for Jefferson nickels with Proof and started to sort through some nickel boxes, 4 to be exact and came up with a rather startling conclusion about the status of nickels out in the wild.

I've searched four boxes and the end result is one box from the 2000's, one box from the '90's and another from the '80's. The final box contains mostly rolls from the '00's and '90's with a smattering of rolls from the other decades with a roll of dregs.

Kind of a expected coins from prior to the '60's appear to be hard to come by. I have a couple of more boxes to sort through (again by decade) and really don't expect to see any different results than what I have already found. So I expect that I will have to be visiting the lcs to fill in some holes and getting to the proofs.

I have another nickel album without proofs that is up to date that I started a few years ago and don't remember how I filled in the holes for the coins prior to the '60's. I do remember that the last coin I needed for a complete album was '59 (I believe), but I can't swear that I found all those coins in the wild. However from time to time I was getting some rolls to find better updatable coins for what I have.

This album is definitely going to be different because I know from the start that I'll be needing to obtain the proof coins.

Don't know how much that is going to be setting me back.

I bet you had no problem finding a 1964! Maybe it's just me, but if I ever have more than six or eight nickels in one place, it seems like at least one has to be a '64.
I looked up the mintage one time, and I think they produced a billion or two that year, several times more than normal production in those days. Since nobody is melting them down to get Three Cents worth of nickel out of them, I guess they'll just float around forever...

@ghostrider - the set will cost you some bucks. I think I paid around $200 for proof nickels from 2010 back to 68. I still have quite a number of Dansco holes in the older dates to fill in decent condition so will likely have to shell out for those. The likelihood of finding BU through CRH is not good. I use a Whitman Classic folder for my circulation/circulated finds. Good luck and have fun!

, Typeguy. Production of '64 nickels was 2.3B.

Isn't it amazing that if you get rolls of Jefferson nickels from stores or banks, you can almost fill an Album. Always makes me wonder if the Mint just keeps on making old ones over and over.

Yes indeed. That's what makes this such a fun set to put together, and a great set for beginners. I have a box of nickels in the wings waiting to be cracked. I still have a few holes that I'd like to fill!
