I'm heading up to NYC soon, and I was wondering if you guys know any of the big coin stores that you could recommend I go to. I'm definitely heading to Stack's Bowers, but I also want to go someplace where I can actually afford the coins.

Stacks has affordable stuff too, I bought a few common Morgans off them when I was there a few years back.

Thanks. I'll check out those, and of course their gold ATM machine too.

Unless things have changed in the past half year or so, Stacks did not have much of a retail operation. The associate said that the staff was trying to being it back, but in Nov all they had were a few high end pieces on display. Recommend calling first.
Over all, found it pretty dismal environment in total... I had picked several dealers out of the phone book and found all of them had closed.

I looked up a bunch of coin dealers online, so no problems with them being closed permanently, but I have had trouble finding dealers that weren't closed on the weekends.

If you find any place good, please post about it. I might be in NYC in a few weeks. Drove by stacks in the spring, but it was closed that day. I agree that they have mostly high end stuff (at least on their website).
With the possibility of internet sales worldwide from any location, a brink and mortar shop's rent in NYC may not make financial sense, unfortunately, unless it only selling high end stuff.

Brigandi's Coins and Collectibles is good, but it isn't open on the weekends.

This might be a lame post, but didn't MACYS have a coin and stamp department? I know that years ago they did, but not sure anymore. I bought a proof set there sometime mid last century. Sorry for the trip down memory lame.

They had a boys scout's section in Macy's? Also, sorry edweather, I think Macy's closed the Coin and Stamp department down a few decades ago.

There is this: http://www.pauljbosco.com/I had pretty bad luck finding actual physical shops that sold coins in New York. When I visited, one shop was closing down because the owner had passed away, another had stopped keeping coins, and a third was a glorified gold seller. That Bosco was one of the few I found.
