Something has scratched the die... I've seen the same type of lines on George VI 50cent coins... Not sure if it was caused when the die was being finished before being put into production or something caused it in production.

It is under the P and M------must be a simple planchet error--IMHO

A die scratch would also reveal itself partly on the sides of the raised legends----I do not see any.

The exit wound from the M shows an abrupt exit from underneath the M---if this is a scratch the exit speed of the scratch would have to equal the speed of light.
If the scratch was in the direction of the head-----there would be scratch evidence on the side of the M, on matter what speed.

It looks like die scratches/tool marks to me, too. Don't forget, only the smooth upper surface of the die (which would be the lowest part of the coin design -- the field) would have the scratch on it. The letters could show those lines coming out of their sides, but wouldn't necessarily have any marks actually running partly up them.
