Since I've started collecting, I've wondered where some of the rare varieties and errors originate into circulation. I'm unfamiliar with the mint'is processes for packing and shipping new issue coins. Can an error or variety occur on 1 coin in a fresh roll from the mint or would all coins in the roll contain the same error?

For instance the 1964 extra waterline nickel or the 1973 large bust quarter. Were these varieties shipped out with certain rolls containing coins with all the same error or could you find a single coin in the roll that was different from the rest?

In 1964 and 1973 coins left the mint in bags not rolls. They were rolled by the banks or Brinks. Any mixture could be found in a roll.

Good to know, what about the newer issue coins? The 1996 near and far 6 or the 1990 bare belly beavers?

Shark, I am not sure how these newer coins get rolled specifically, however I know that right off the press they all go into a big hopper, and down the proverbial factory line to the end. so it I really unlikely to find a whole mint roll of these.

I know from doing thousands of rolls of nickels, and finding the 1990 bare belly, that I have found variations, some lesser bare than others, some fully bare etc. So much so that I only put the fully bare ones in 2x2's I keep all the partials in a roll.

Can be pretty much the luck of the draw. When I had my coin shop in the 80's and 90's two banks supplied us with rolls or bags to make tourist sets (in plastic holders Cent to Dollar, later two dollar ). Hardly ever found key varieties but did acquire some planchet clips and blanks on occasion. One exception was a thousand dollar bag of halves from the Bank of Nova Scotia in 1982. The bag was approx. 60 40 split of both types of the 1982 Large beads and small beads. Welcome !!

The above posters have it right, IMO. I think its usual to get a mix -- I cracked a roll of 2012 pennies and got three different kinds of minor pitting marks out of the roll, fairly evenly split amongst the 3 types.
