I got this coin some time back on a local estate sale. I am trying to figure out the exact denomination of the host coin and the counter stamped and rough value. The counter stamped coins from Portuguese Angola can be found in 1/2, 1 2, 4 Macuta denominations jut doing a quick seasrch on eBay/google. I am not sure what is the denomination of this coin. I tried to getting a close up but not sure how good it is. Thanks for the help.

I took a quick look into the Krause Catalog of World Coins and found the original coins are issued for Angola.
Since 2 and 4 macutas are silver based, they can be exluded. Based on the year of the original coin (1785), there are the following possibilities for copper coins:

- 1/4 macuta , KM#27 (mintage: 13000 pcs), diameter approximately 31 mm
- 1/2 macuta , KM#28 (mintage: 154000 pcs), diameter approximately 34 mm
- 1 macuta, KM#20 (mintage: 194000 pcs), diameter approximately 44,5 mm

If we retrace the counterstamped coinage (manufactured in 1837), following possibilities exist with an original coin of 1785 (according to Krause):
- KM#49.2: 1/2 macuta on 1/4 macuta KM#27 (value USD: Good 4; VG 8; F 19; VF 42)
- KM#50.2: 1 macuta on 1/2 macuta KM #28 (value USD: Good 8; VG 11; F 25; VF 48)
- KM#51.2: 2 macuta on 1 macuta KM#20 (value USD: Good 6; VG 12; F 22; VF 45)

Based on measuring the diameter you should be able to determine the correct determination.

Thank you much appreciated. It appears to be 2 macuta on 1 macuta.

just curious when grading the counter stamped coins, grading indicates the host coin state or the state counterstamp ?

I believe Krause is using a net or overall coin grade. Ideally, the host and stamp should be graded separately, or the coin as a whole graded, then the grade of the stamp mentioned separately. I am not sure of the TPG attitude to this, but I presume it's the same as what Krause is using.
