In the next few weeks a new factually based numismatic guide on South African coins including a comprehensive pricing guide will be released. What sets this book aside from Hern's recent catalogues and many other South African coin catalogues before it is the fact that the publishers have spent a lot of money fixing the glaring errors that have been simply parroted in the past without any attempt to set the record straight. The money spent by the publishers has been on research and rectifies these blatant inaccuracies. The new coin catalogue will be of very high quality with colour images of coins as well as a background history on interesting coins. I have no doubt that the new catalogue will be the foundation behind a huge shift in thinking in coin collecting in South Africa. Like Krause, the new catalogue reflects the fact that the Griquatown token coins are totally irrelevant to numismatics in South Africa and numismatically worthless.
The publishers are very well known and respected numismatists in South Africa. I could say more but won't at this stage. Watch this space for more. Looking forward to debating the new book here with anyone once it is released. I made a passing reference to this upcoming event a few weeks ago on my thread here at this link https://goccf.com/t/180193Kind regards Scott Balson

Would it have a background history on the Sammy Marks tickeys, Veld Ponds, Burger Ponds, and Mafeking Seige notes, plus some guidelines on how to spot good quality fakes of these?

You ask: Would it have a background history on the Sammy Marks tickeys, Veld Ponds, Burger Ponds, and Mafeking Seige notes, plus some guidelines on how to spot good quality fakes of these?

Answer:
I think you will find the page on the Veld Pond fascinating as the coin is much rarer than previously thought.
Cooney himself (the mintmaster) will do the talking through an old letter - included in the new catalogue

Numismat asks....
Any chance it includes SA merchant tokens as well? :)
--------------------------------
Answer:
The catalogue is the history of S African coins that freely circulated as money in the region.
A South African currency token is recognised for the first time like the Clunies-Ross Cocos Islands currency token of the early 1900s.
In fact this trade/merchant/currency token is correctly recognised as the first widely circulating indigenous coinage in S Africa - and its not the Griquatown tokens.
Kind regards

Let me pre-empt this and give you a few points to ponder on the Griquatown token coin subject:
1. Campbell visited Griquatown in 1813 â€" Suggested a circulating medium of silver with different values.
2. LMS report for 1815, 1816 â€" Directors were procuring coinage of silver tokens
3. Campbell's second visit 1820, extract from his third journal â€" Landdrost Stockenstrom from Graaff Reinett, with whom the Griquas tried to establish formal trade, advised Campbell to apply to Government for sanction to allow Griqua money as a form of currency in Graaff Reinett and Beaufort districts.
4. Approximately one week later the coinage, amongst other things, were discussed with some of the Griqua elders. They said that "if it would pass in the colony, the Griquas would readily take it."
5. In a letter by Heinrich Helm to John Philip in 1821, he writes the following:
"The greatest part of the Griqua money is still the Society's property, which Anderson when leaving left in his care. Campbell felt that Anderson disposed the silver at too cheap a rate, so Helm was waiting for Campbell to let him know the real value."
From the above it is clear that the tokens were issued to the Griquas by the missionaries. How many circulated and were used for trade is unknown, but I cannot believe, that not one token ever changed hands. After all the Griquas were competent traders.
There are a host of reasons why these tokens never succeeded, but that is not important. What is important is that they were minted, issued and circulated within Griquatown around 1820.

Given that you are a completely new member and your first post is abusive......you have lost a considerable amount of credibility from your first ever. if you have a warning then couch in much more appropriate terms.

You continue to abuse this member who has said he is not this person you are talking about. If you have a problem with this person take it up with him and don't use this forum for your personal grievance.
