I collect coins related to the story of the Maria theresa thaler( as well as collecting the MTT). One back ground story has been a bit tough to fill in. A Luigino ( 5 sols or 1/12 ECU) with an ottoman countermark dated AH 1080 (AD 1669). I finally got one this week. Actually it was a twofor; Counter mark plus hard to get base coin. The base coin is an uncommon 1666 Monaco Luigino. The mark is not fully clear but it translates as "legal tender. And the last two digits of the date( although the arabic zero is very hard to spot) are part of the mark. I was lucky the auctioneer didn't really know what it was so I got it at a reasonable price ( a little over GBP 300 Including BP and postage) I have seen this counter mark on much more common Luigino go for very close to €1000.00

Keep an eye out in 2013 I picked up another countermarked Luigino from the same period ( different mark: there are three) for €90.00. Its not a well known series of coins.

The coinage of the 1600's is very crude and interesting. Nice coin.

Its a little ironic that luigino look crude to us these days. One of the reasons( not the main one though) they were popular was the fact they were one of the first milled coins seen in that region.
